What is a Shake-Out? It is an earthquake drill that had its beginnings in 2008 in Southern California. The purpose of the drill is to encourage the public to prepare for and to protect themselves during a large earthquake. By practicing actions ahead of time, lives can be saved and the impact of a major earthquake on our lives can be reduced.
Everyone is invited to participate in Old Mountain View’s Shake Out 2024!
The primary safety practice when the shaking starts is to D·C·H—Drop, Cover and Hold-On.
- Drop to your hands and knees. Crawl only as far as needed to reach better cover, without going through more debris. If in bed, turn over on to your stomach and use the pillow to cover your head.
- Cover your head and neck as well as possible.
- Hold on! If you are under a table or desk with one hand and be prepared to move with the table.
Practicing D·C·H is important, and it’s best to get ready and prepare for an earthquake before one happens.
