Promote Community with a Block Party

by Carola Thompson and Melanie Kaye
Did you know that the Old Mountain View Neighborhood Association has support and funding to help you put on a block party? A block party helps create a stronger sense of community and belonging. People feel connected and supported where they live. To learn more about the resources go to:

Here are some ideas to inspire you and tips to help you get out there and do it!
From Carola:
Getting started can be the hardest part. I partnered with a neighbor, and together we reached out to people we didn’t know. We already had many contacts because we had mobilized our neighbors to get the city to add a 4-way stop at Mercy Bush Park. We formed a small planning committee and chose mid-September for our potluck event from when it is warm, and everyone is back from their summer travels and to hold it on our street. We then filed the Block Party Permit Application with the City of Mountain View for permission to close the street, and the OMVNA Block Party Grant Application, requesting funds to support the event. Neighbors set up tables, brought side dishes and games to share like table tennis and corn hole. We grilled meats and vegan proteins paid for with the OMVNA grant money. The event was a success, creating a renewed sense of community. We held our first block party in 2022 and are now planning our third Annual Block Party. It gets better every year as more folks participate.
From Melanie:
A dedicated planning committee is important. Sharing the planning and day-of tasks will make it much more enjoyable for all. Create an email group, and keep people engaged with regular communications and positive energy. Encourage residents to form groups for specific activities, to be inclusive of differing interest levels. Keep it simple. Our street has gone from a full day of activities, including games, custom shirts, and an onsite barbeque to morning coffee with a potluck brunch. This format has allowed people to participate at their own comfort level, distributes cost and leads to more participation. If the event just promotes neighbors gathering for good conversation, you have planned a successful block party. And having part of a day without traffic is a great way to get people to come outside and get better acquainted, in the middle of a street they all share. •
